With Nix home-manager, installed software and configurations stay tied to the user environment. There is substantial overlap between how software is managed on NixOS, macOS, and other Linux distributions. home-manager is a portable compromise that creates isolated user environments with the daily tools needed.

For a comparison and combination of home-manager with system-level NixOS modules, see https://nixos-and-flakes.thiscute.world/nixos-with-flakes/start-using-home-manager.
